1983

Brandon Tartikoff described 1983 as his "year of living dangerously."

On TV, 23½ of the 66 weekly prime time slots were set aside for brand new shows including For Love And Honor, Navy (renamed Emerald Point N.A.S) and The Yellow Rose - Cybill Shepherd's Hollywood comeback vehicle after a 4-year absence.

In sport, Chris Evert was one championship away from winning the elusive Grand Slam of tennis. "I am very, very disappointed, more about losing in the 3rd round of Wimbledon than I am about losing the Grand Slam," Chris later conceded, pointing out, "That's never happened before."

It was noted Chris had played in 34 Grand Slam tournaments prior to the 1983 Wimbledon championships and never lost before the semi-finals.

Winner Kathy Jordan maintained, "I think it is good for women's tennis that someone is able to beat Chris or Martina because they have the aura of invincibility about them. It is more frightening to think about losing the chance to beat Chris or Martina than actually going out there and playing them. It is a definite psychological barrier."

In 1983, Martina Navratilova won her first U.S. Open championship by defeating Chris in the final. "On paper, I was in the match," Chris allowed afterward. "In my mind, I was not."

The elusive Grand Slam (comprised of the Australian, French and U.S Open championships and Wimbledon) must be won in the same year. Those who did win - so far - were Don Budge in 1938, Maureen Connolly in 1953, Rod Laver - twice - in 1962 and 1969, Margaret Smith Court in 1970 and Steffi Graf in 1988.

However the International Tennis Federation (ITF) decided to ease up by also recognizing any players winning the Grand Slam if all 4 championships were won at the same time. Martina succeeded in 1984, Steffi in 1994 and Serena Williams in 2003.

John McEnroe made the comment after winning his 2nd round match at Wimbledon in 1983, "Players have emotions. They aren't robots. If they want everyone to be robots and not have personalities and don't want anyone to question the calls, then that's fine. But don't blame me for the way the rules have been written."

On Sunday, November 6, 1983 Chris and Jimmy Connors teamed up to win the World Mixed Doubles Championship played at the Astroarena in Houston Texas. Chris later told the 5,500 spectators, "We haven't played together, tennis together, in about 9 years."

The next Sunday, November 13, Chris won her 4th Lynda Carter-Maybelline Tennis Classic held at Deerfield Beach in Florida. "It's humanly not possible to play 12 months a year," Chris expressed.

Of the soap opera, The Yellow Rose, actor Sam Elliot recalled in 2006, "The show was really about these guys who were trying to work out a lifestyle that was ranching and the oil business came into it. They were modern day cowboys but...(the network) turned it into soap opera."

For Love And Honor was the TV version of the 1982 box office hit, An Officer And A Gentleman. Yaphet Kotto who also starred in the 1973 James Bond movie, Live and Let Die, mentioned, "...When you've got a hit film, everyone wants to cast you. It was a huge break for me and for black actors and actresses in general. There had never been a black villain chasing James Bond before."
