ECKANKAR

Eckankar came from the Hindu word said to mean "co-worker with God". "Everything that happens to us is something we have brought about. You learn the power of thinking, the power of your thoughts. Spirit works with the thoughts we have formed. Whatever we put our attention on is what will be."

Eckankar was said would show the "path to total awareness". To help understand, it was explained, "Eckankar is the oldest religious study in the world. It can be found in all religions, but is not a religion in itself...My understanding of what religion is, is a set of guidelines and teachings which a group of people try to follow. Eckankar, in not being a religion, is for the individual. In religion, there is one understanding. In Eckankar, we work as individuals – what may be right for you may not be right for me. Everyone is equal in our eyes, so we really can’t put any one person up as teacher. In church, you go to be taught, which is fine, but in Eckankar you seek truth through spiritual study. Its basic concept is, we are soul, living in a physical body to learn of love and divine wisdom, so that we might become co-workers with God."

Eckankar "is essentially the spiritual light and sound of God. That's why Eckankar doesn’t say another religion is either right or wrong. Eckankar is not a cult. The term cult connotes the worship of an individual. One of the major aspects of the (Eckankar) teachings is the individual's freedom of choice."

Paul Twitchell introduced the teachings of Eckankar to the mordern world in 1965 after being trained by the 970th Eck Master, Revazar, a Tibetan. "When God created us, He gave us a unique thing – free will. But He held out one person as His contact point...that is the living Eck Master. He is our channel for truth. He communicates with God and is able to counsel us, his students."

It was noted, "Eckist rarely pray. Most prayer has the purpose to tell God what’s wrong and try to straighten it out. We try to surrender to God to be of aid for the greater good of all...The word 'reincarnation' disturbs some people. And the word 'Sugman' – our word for God – bothers some people."

Eckankar had been described as "the ancient science of soul travel...Eckankar is an opening of consciousness. Man is actually a vehicle of spirit...Soul travel really isn't travel at all. We became aware of ourselves in the pure positive God world. The physical world is not our true home. It's just a school, a place for experience. Everyone soul travels in dreams. They don’t know it, but they do."

Eckankar was said based on a system of levels or planes of consciousness and was explained as such:

1. The first - the physical plane, is the reality we occupy most of the time;

2. The second - the psychic or astral plane, is the seat of emotions;

3. The third - the memory plane, the seat of our past lives;

4. The fourth - the plane of religion, mental activity, philosophy;

5. The fifth - the unconsciousness and intuition plane;

6. The sixth - the soul plane

"Everyone operates in all 6 planes at all times," it was said. "Many women use the 5th plane a great deal...Eckankar teaches that all paths will eventually lead us back to God."
