THE NEW LAND

The New Land was described as "an American epic". It was ABC's answer to NBC's Little House On The Prairie.

Set in the Minnesota Territory in the year 1850. The narrator informed the viewers, "Population: 6000 brave and lonely souls."

The New Land recounted the story of two Swedish families - the Larsens and the Lundstroms - who had emigrated to America to build "a new life out of sweat, muscle and determination."

They were said "came to this country with little more than their hopes and dreams. But they had much to learn. For this new land would demand not only their strength but their fate as well."

At this point, the narrator reminded the audience, "They had another name for America. They called it The New Land."

Bonnie Bedelia, who starred as Bruce Willis' wife in the movie Die Hard, played the part of Ann Larsen, the sister in law of Bo Larsen played by Kurt Russell.

In one scene she sobbed uncontrollably to her husband Christian Larsen played by Scott Thomas, "Does everything in this country has to be hard?"

However up against the top-rated sitcom All In The Family, The New Land lasted only six episodes.

On the weekend of July 3rd and July 4th in 1976, those six episodes were compressed into a two-part three-hour movie which ABC reran as part of the bicentenary celebration.
