THE POWERS OF MATTHEW STAR

Star Prince renamed The Powers of Matthew Star was initially planned for airing in 1981. However the network postponed the screening of series until 1982 after an incident on the set.

"I really expected to be replaced so that the show could have gone on," Peter Barton later revealed.

Set in the fictional town of Crestridge, Peter played the orphan Matthew Star. Louis Gossett Jr. played Walter Shepherd, Matthew's guardian. "He's sort of like Obi-Wan was on Star Wars," Lou explained.

The "powers" as suggested in the title alluded to Matthew's extrasensory and telekinesis perception abilities.

"If there was ever a redeeming character, it's Walter Shepherd," Lou elaborated. "He teaches goodness, character-building, values and morals to young Matthew."

In one scene the following exchange took place:-

Matthew: "You're not listening to me. I was inside her head."

Walter: "How do you know they were not your own thoughts?"

Matthew: "Because they were in her head, not mine."

Of those "thoughts", Matthew maintained, "It wasn't a hallucination and it wasn't a recollection. It was a prediction and she was right."

Mike Post composed the theme. He made the comment, "You really have the work done when you have the theme. They don't want it good, they want it by 9:00."

He related, "See, we’re the last guys they call – us and the sound effects." Hence, "you do have to concentrate, especially when the shows are similar."

Of music, Tom Jones shared, "I've never taken any risky chances with my career. Some singers go into a different direction and that can be very chancy."

Tom pointed out, "Bobby Darin made that mistake at one time. He was a slick nightclub performer and he changed his image completely, put denims on, little glasses and a hat....It wasn’t a gradual change....People get an image of you in their minds and if you step out too far from that image, that can be very damaging."
